You never know whether you’re blog posts will bring you traffic. One thing you could say is that traffic is unpredictable. You can never pinpoint the exact reason why one of your posts brings more traffic than another one. However, you can see the “basic” reason why people like one article better than another. Over the constant research I did for a company, I found that five types of blog posts will generate more traffic than any others.
The best thing is that it doesn’t really matter what topics you choose to address. These types of blog posts will generate traffic, comments, linkbacks, and social media syndication for all topics. They continue to work over and over again even if the information has been written before. Don’t just write content, but write content in a way that brings traffic. Here are my five types of blog posts that will get you more traffic:
1. Numbered Post or Round-Up Post
A numbered Post and a round-up post are close to the same thing. They can also be known as list posts. This is because they typically contain a list of topics, ideas, sources, etc. Generally these are one of the easiest posts to write.
A lot of people do not use a numbered post but instead just list their ideas. However, they should always put a number of how many different ideas, topics, sources, etc. that is used in their posts. Why? Because people love these kind of blog posts. They love them for many different reasons and I have written a complete article about numbered posts.
You can see how popular they are by just looking at some of my blog posts. My most popular blog posts always have a number in the headline. For example, I wrote 15 Blogs All Bloggers Should Read and it became an instant hit.
2. The How to Post
This is also one of the more popular kinds of blog posts. Everyone seems to love to learn something that could benefit them especially if it is easy to replicate. I have recently been writing how to blog posts and many more people seem to come to my blog on the days I post those articles.
For example, I recently wrote an article called How to Build a Community on Your Blog. I went step-by-step and told people how they can build a community on their blog. The fact is, building a community is something a lot of us would like to do more of, but we don’t know how. I have had a lot of luck building communities on other blogs that I have started and I recently began to feel like this blog was going that way too. I thought I could pass my knowledge on to my readers. It is an article that benefits the reader so it brings traffic to your blog.
3. The Controversial Post
This is actually one of my favorite kind of posts and it will sure bring you loads of traffic. There are many different ways to be controversial when writing an article. Having a strong opinion on something is okay even if people do not agree with you. That is basically the point. When you get on topics such as is it professional or not to disclose your online earnings, tell people whether a link is an affiliate link or not, whether it’s okay to photoshop your feeds subscriber count, etc. you’re tapping into controversial topics.
Those are all very controversial topics and people seem to be drawn to them. There are controversial topics in every blog niche. If you are writing about the Constitution then I am sure you have a lot of controversy. You have abortion, gun rights, gay rights, etc. Everyone seems to have strong feelings about those which will make them read your article and they will likely put their two cents in by commenting.
4. The Motivational Post
The motivational Post is one of the most compelling types of posts to blog about. Getting your readers motivated or excited is much more powerful than a post that provides entertainment for the few minutes it took people to read the article. Even though telling people how much you have made blogging is controversial, it can still get people motivated to make money also. They are more likely to leave more excited than anything.
It is possible that visitors and readers that get motivated and excited from a blog post will return to your blog. That is what you want the most so why not do it. That is why it is still one of the most compelling types of blog post today.
5. The Hot Topic Post
Everyone seems to like reading about the latest hot topic. Lately it seems that the presidential election has taken over everything. It’s pretty much a guarantee that if you write about the presidential election on your blog that you will get traffic. It’s difficult remembering a time when the presidential election hasn’t been on the list of top searches (on blog searches).
The one thing you have to remember is to always relate it to your blog topic. You don’t want your readers and visitors to think that you have lost focus. There are many clever ways to implement the hot topics into your articles. If you are writing a post about dogs then use the headline, “What the presidential election has taught us about dogs?”.
Those are the five types of blog posts that will get you traffic. There are many other kind of blog posts went through my research for a company I worked for, I found that these five types of blog posts generated the most traffic. Like anything else in the blogging world, I’m sure some of these posts work better for a certain kinds of topics.

I always want to write a post that was controversial but could never think of a good topic. I guess if I really looked at it I would find a great on since there are many out there.
Yeah, I think if you would really try to find something controversial that has to do with your niche than you could write one of these posts. I’m sure I can look into what you could write about that’s controversial, just let me know if you want me to.
I think I have a “Hot Topic,” site, though it is very niche. I only get a moderate amount of traffic, but with a big amount of comments, emails, and other feedback activity.
Problems, problems, problems. Guess I really don’t know what I’m doing about blogging. Wish I had your “touch.”
It takes time to build a constant flow of traffic to your blog. If you are wanting a constant flow of traffic that try to write for search engines and social media web sites. Your blog post titles are really important because they need to have the keywords that people would search for. They also need to be interesting so that you can get traffic from social media web sites. Like me, I mainly try to hit web sites like StumbleUpon.
About #4 on this list. I think the reason why Franklin Bishop, Steve Pavlina and Darren Rowse are so successful is they try to motivate bloggers to do better.
With the high number of bloggers out there, this type of post will never go out of style.
Motivational posts that ring true are always bookmarked, Stumbled Up or linked to by me.
Thanks for your kind words first of all. Second, I totally agree that motivational blog post will never go out of style. People love to be motivated to do things and they will come back your blog if you do this for them. Great comment.
Good Post Franklin, list posts and how to posts are very good and easy to write, but #3 and #4 are difficult to do, you must have some experience to write good controversial or motivatiol post,
Shoto Azikuri
You do have to have some experience to write motivational and controversial blog posts. However, the sooner you start the better you will be a couple months. We all have to develop as bloggers and writers. I’m happy you brought that up Shoto.
I love motivational posts. That is exactly why I visit Blogs such as this one over and over again.
While blogging is fun and I love doing it, sometimes we just need to be inspired in order to put out that extra effort and keep going.
I know. It just feels good to be motivated and inspired sometimes. It’s what all keeps us going. However, what makes me keep going as watching Jay Leno every night which is kind of weird. But hey, whatever keeps us going.
One key to controversial is not to make it too personal..this can seriously backfire and then you have no readers.
I completely agree with you on not making it too personal. One of my most personal attacks I did was calling other bloggers idiots if they did not comment on other blogs. I was happy that I didn’t lose too many readers from that.
Quite true. If someone really is an idiot, then say so. But if it’s merely an opinion…no matter how true…then that’s dangerous.
These are excellent tips and should apply to articles as well. I wonder what it is about those numbered posts. I think people sense they can collect info fast without investing an unknown ammount of time reading an entry or hunting for the vital info.
Actually wrote an article about why people like numbered posts. The main thing is that they are easy to read and you can skim them.
You’re so right.. Can’t agree more with what you’re sharing here dude..
Great list Franklin!
Lists (numbered posts) are my favorite types of posts. They have proved to be truly effective over at my blog and always get tons of views and comments. I’ve never really tried “The Controversial Post”, so I’m going to be trying it out soon.
I think numbered of posts are always easy to write and like you say they are really effective. Good luck with the controversial post, don’t hate me if it goes bad.
I think the first point is very true. I’ve just done a post on Top Ten Secret Santa Gifts for under a fiver, and it’s proved more popular than many of my other previous posts.
I think people do really like bite-sized bits of info and a list is a great way to recap what’s out there on the market.
Thanks for the other tips!
I agree with you. I actually wrote a post on why people like list . Or numbered posts. People just seem to be attracted to them.
Nice post. Thanks for sharing this good information.
No problem. Hope you continue to enjoy my posts.
I personally vote for “How-to” blog posts because that what most people are interested in..
It’s all about creative content! Nice post!
Thanks a lot time. You’re right, it is all about creative content.
I try to stay away from controversial posts – people seem to hate me afterwards for some reason :p
…probably because you take the wrong stance.
I’m a big fan of the ‘numbered’ and ‘how to posts’. Tutorials are great too.
One thing that you forgot to mention is the ‘Free Stuff’ post. This also gets a lot of traffic. ie. Free Blog Templates, New plugins, etc… Our most popular post is the one where we released a WordPress plugin.
So… I contend that there are 6 Types of Blog Posts for More Traffic.
“How to” posts are one of my favorites because they tend to keep getting traffic for a long time. If you write a good tutorial on a topic you can become an authority and get lots of links too.
Hot topic posts are the ones i mostly work on. try to provide my readers whats going on HOT in blogsphere or should i say – whats kick ass going on around blogsphere.
Very education. I enjoyed it and look forward to knowing more about your articles. I think your help on leaving comments blog with my link and not consider a spammer. Thanks and keep help people.
Very helpful informations. I am mostly working ton tech-stuff blogs. They are most popular because it also has hot products
I’ve read about some of these types of blog posts at a few different places and now that I have been keeping my site going for a few months, I can say that it’s pretty accurate. Whenever I publish a “list” post (top 10 or similar) I get insane amounts of traffic even if I’m not that invested into the topic.
I’ve been considering doing numbered posts but I find it is not as easy as it appears to be, relative to the topic no doubt. But if they are as popular as you mention it might be worth getting them done.
I like the controversial post and the numbered post. How-tos isn’t bad either…if you know what you’re doing then its fairly easy to do a how-to post.
Thanks for the tips Frank.
I agree with all 5 things you mentioned. Lately I’ve been siing lots of “how to” posts and round up posts. Maybe I should try those kind of post.
