7 Things Bloggers Need to Do Right Now

by Franklin Bishop on September 8, 2008

Most bloggers want to make their blog popular. To become a popular blogger you will need to work hard whenever you have some spare time. Too many times people do not want to use their spare time to do blog related tasks. However, if you do them now then you might be able to not have to do all of them in your spare time in a year or two down the road. It might not feel like it’s worth it now but a year or two goes really fast and then you might be thinking, “If only I had been doing what Franklin was telling me a year or two ago.” So here are 7 things all you bloggers need to do right now:

1. Have Your Own Domain
If you seriously want to become a part-time or full-time blogger than you need to make sure and have your own domain. Your own domain really shows that you are serious about what you are doing and also shows your professional approach towards things. It is best to choose a domain that is easy to remember and that is the same as the title of your blog.

2. Frequent Updates
To become a successful blogger you’ll want to update on a regular basis. People these days do not want wait two or three days for a new article from you. They continuously are looking for blogs that are updated at least once a day. The more articles you write a better chance people will find you also.

3. Comment Posting
Like I have said many times, commenting on other blogs will bring you the readers you’re looking for. Just make sure that you are commenting on blogs that are in your niche. Find the top bloggers in your niche and visit their blogs regularly to see how they’re going ahead with their blogs. Also, make sure to leave comments on every new post they make without spamming.

4. Forums Contribution
It is best to go on a search engine and try to find some of the top forums in your niche. You can then add your blog URL in your signature on most forums. When you add your blog address in your signature section make sure you do not spam the forum with any unrelated links from your blog in your replies.

5. Social Media Sites
I would really recommend spending one hour a day on top social media sites. You should really try to develop your profile on these social news sites by submitting the popular stories you find around the Internet. Make sure not to just submit your own articles. This will make you look like a spammer and any work on social media sites you do will be a waste.

6. Blog Directories
Make a quick search on Google or another search engine to find the top blog directories in general and in your niche. Make sure to submit your blog to these blog directories. They only take you a couple of minutes to submit to each blog directory and even though it will bring minimal traffic why not just take a couple of minutes and sign up to each one.

7. Link Exchange
Make a quick list of bloggers in your niche and some top bloggers in general. Try to send them a polite e-mail requesting that you’re interested in exchanging links with them. There are many bloggers who will be interested in exchanging links with you. Even though this is one of my least favorite things to actually do it does work for many bloggers. You never know so why not try.

Those are 7 easy tips to try and make your blog popular. If you have any more easy tips please let all of us know below. Or if you just have something else to say then state your peace.

Re:Blog Directories

A properly developed backlink program will deliver far more targeted traffic to your blog due to its impact on the search engines than due to the actual directory links themselves.

Develop your backlinks and improve your link popularity by submitting to 3-5 blog directories PER DAY.

I maintain a list of The Top 101 Blog Directories & RSS Submission Sites on my blog at:

Blog Directories

Since I update this list WEEKLY there are now 290 entries listed.

How I Got A Job In The OC September 8, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I’m currently doing frequent updates, some commenting on other blogs, some social media sites, and am just starting to get into using forums for my blog. I don’t have a domain but I use a blogger account.

I don’t really like the directories idea, im more focusing my time on commenting and building networks on other blog sites. Using directories just seems like a waste of time to me.

This comment is for “How I Got A Job in The OC”. It sounds like you have some great ideas, and I do all of these, except “getting into forums”. I was wondering – are you talking about forums on your site, or somewhere else? I just went and checked out your site, and there was no forum. So I guess you mean to outside forums, or can I just not see it? Do you know how to create a forum? That would be cool. My biggest problem with forums is i can’t even figure out how to navigate through them at this point, LOL. But I would be very interested to learn more about forums if you or somebody else would leave a comment. Thanks!

How I Got A Job In The OC:

If you are commenting on other blogs, here is a recommended course of action to follow on a daily basis:

(1)Make a list of the most important keywords for your job
classification.

(2)Go to Google Blog Search

(3)Type in your most important keyword. Make comments on topics
where you can add something meaningful to the discussion but also where your comment draws on your job training skills and knowledge.

(4)Repeat procedure for other important keywords

(5)Make sure you are subscribed to follow up comments

(6)Always respond in some way to replies to your comments and start a dialogue going

(7)Do not describe yourself as an “unemplyed software engineer”.
Instead you are a software engineer currently focused on. . . .
(could be enhancing the Web2.0 experience – whatever you claim your strengths to be)

(8)Go to RentACoder

Bid on some “open bid requests” and STAY BUSY.

(9)Add bids your are working on to your resume

(10)Add your RentACoder listing to your social networking sites

Hope these suggestions help.

Robert

What excellent ideas, Franklin, Robert, and “How I Get A Job In The OC”. I want to add one idea. It’s called “batching”. It is more of a procedure of how you go about implementing your daily blogging tasks. It is about setting up a schedule, so to speak, and putting like tasks together, on like days. Or at least making a schedule. It was explained in ProBlogger. I believe it was Darren who told us he didn’t want to write everyday, so he picked a few days a week, and wrote ALL of his blog posts on those few days! Like he wrote them on Tues, Thursday, and Friday (just for example, I don’t know if that is exactly correct). Then he would pick, say, Monday,to go to all of his social media sites, Wednesday to comment… Well you get the idea. Now I am starting to make up a schedule for myself. It is not carved in stone yet, (but will be when I finalize it!) but I am thinking of making it go something like this: write a daily blog entry, jot down ideas for future blog entries as I think of them, Monday: leave comments & answer emails, Tuesday: leave comments & answer emails, Wednesday: social media, Thursday: researching blog topics & learning from blogs like problogger and this one, Friday: blog directory as well as commenting and emails, Saturday: finding new blogs, commenting, and going to forums. Sunday: Other than writing and posting a blog entry — do we get a day off folks? I have to pay attention to husband and go to church, LOL.

So what do youo all think? Is scheduling a good idea? Does anybody here schedule their blogging tasks? Providing you let yourself change your schedule if need be, or if you just feel like it, to experiment — or merely for fun when you want to break up the monotony? And would you be able to get back on track after evaluating whether the schedule changes worked or not? Just wondered. Who schedules here?

Oh, one more things I do schedule in. I write entries for the AOL blog — Magic Smoke. It is where AOL bloggers come to get some of their information concerning AOL blogging, to find out what is going on in the AOL blogging community, and to play our community games! If you would like to take a peak at what I have to schedule some of my time for (a caption contest that takes place once a week, that my sister and I created, and that requires my sister and I to write & post four or more entries a week in), please consider going to Magic Smoke. I won’t give the link b/c I don’t want anybody navigating away from this page. So if you would like to see the cool caption game I created and run, shoot me an email at fisherkristina@aol.com and just put in subject line, “please show me a caption game Magic Smoke entry.” I will mail you the link! :)

WOW, thats really all I can say about this blog is WOW. Such a wealth of information I will surely be back to read more and more from it and LEARN!!!

I found this blog while visiting dailyblogtips dot com and I am glad I did.

I have been reading the tips and I am a very new blogger with some new questions.

I was wondering what kind of blog am I as I wonder what category to put myself in in blog directories.

I just wanted to kick a blog off to actually publish my everyday activities as I thought it may be of interest to my freinds, family, and newcomers.

See we are all so busy and freinds and family often wonder what I am upto these days, so I though hey I will start a blog and maybe they will keep up with me that way.

I started adding adsense ads in hopes that I can generate some income and that has been a flop. I might have made 32 cents in a month.

So anyways any tips would be apprieciated and someone please tell me what category I fall in with my blog.

Yes of course but when I go to a directory to list it like at http://www.blogcatalog.com/directory/personal they have other catagories to put it in and I am unsure where I belong in there.

death and dying
family
gay and lesbian
weddings
fitness
parenting
relationships
development and growth

Thanks for the quick reply

Hello,

Does anyone have any good suggests for link exchanges? Personally to me it seem as if its a dying approach these days, but maybe I am going about it the wrong way. Any good suggests or places to go or help for this topic of link exchanges.

Thanks ahead of time for the help!

Forum contribution is good advice – and probably often overlooked. A lot of people post in forums and if you are able to establish yourself in a few these people will be interested in your site. But you have to establish yourself and actually participate. A few flyby posts will not catch many people’s attention.

This is very interesting. I didn’t realize that it was so important to have your own domain. I see very many bloggers not having their own domain and they seem to be doing fine. Doesn’t really help that much does that? Of course I am a newbie so don’t mind me asking questions.

James September 29, 2008 at 3:34 am

I suppose having your own domain makes your blog seem more professional or more important because you are no longer using a free hosting account that anyone can sign up for. But, of course, a lot more comes into play when creating that impression than simply a domain name. It is entirely possible to have a popular blog, say, hosted on blogger. For most personal blogs this is sufficient. However, if you are trying to make money or want to sell something, having your own domain will help you appear more legitimate. I don’t know if there are any SEO advantages to having your own domain, though.
