Ads on Blogs Similar to “Problogger.net”

by Franklin Bishop on August 1, 2008

Problogger.net is one of the most popular blogs that helps you make a better blog and make money off doing it. One thing that I thought about doing was to advertise on Problogger because Darren (The Owner) has over 50,000 subscribers.

The quote I got back on the price to advertise was around $1,000 a month. I thought that was pretty pricey, but knowing how many subscribers he has and knowing the amount of organic traffic that goes to his website everyday made it seem like it would be worth it. I ended up deciding to wait until I got more content written.

It has now been three months later and I started to forget about the idea of even advertising on problogger.net. It came to my mind again when I was on the Darren’s blog and noticed a certain advertisement. It was the same one that I saw on their three months ago named: Smarter Than Your Average Blog.

I decided to check the blog out myself and see if it ever got much traffic from advertising on problogger.net. I was surprised to find out that he still had hardly any subscribers. What was even worse then was that he wasn’t getting a lot of traffic from the Problogger website at all.

This has led me to conclude that it might not be worth advertising on a blog with a lot of subscribers and organic traffic. Then I began to think about maybe it is the advertisement itself. Maybe the advertisement did not attract people to click on his ad to go to his blog. You would have thought he would have figured this out after just one month advertising. At that time he should have changed the way his ad looked to see if a change in appearance would attract more clicks.

What we can learn from this is that we probably should figure out what advertisement would attract people to click the most before paying this kind of money. The best way to find out what to use would be trying a free service like Entrecard. If you can get a lot of clicks using Entrecard then I’m sure you’ll even get more clicks having your advertisement on a highly trafficked website like problogger.net.

The same thing happened to me too. I once advertised on Johnchow blog through entrecard and at the same time at another blog named Atniz[dot]com. And I can say Atniz brought a lot more traffic than Johnchow.

So the conclusion is considering just the blog’s traffic and readers is not all but we also should take care of how we present ourselves through our ads.

I wonder why this person continues to advertise on this website if it is not working. I went to the website and I do not even see one comment. it is so strange that the owner of that blog cannot get any traffic off the problogger.

It’s weird. He or she should stop the ads on problogger if his or her blog cannot attract peoples click on the ads. Am I right?

Sorry for broken English.

I checked out the blog and it was pretty good to be honest :) It’s weird Problogger isn’t sending any traffic his way, people must have gotten used to the ad or something

I saw the ad on problogger more than once but never clicked on it (honestly, I do not click a great deal no matter what site I am on)

Your post made me really look at the ad. What is it advertising? What is its “call to action”? what is he/she selling? Although visually ok, it doesn’t “say” anything. It just says the blogs name but I didn’t even realize that until your post. Your post was much better advertising.

Why not put “see my blog for tips” or something to make me actually click

As a side note, the ad that did make me click recently on one blog was the Krumler ad. It was so badly done graphically, it got my attention plus it made me curious based on the text. It made me act. (p.s. I promise I don’t have anything to do with the site — I didn’t sign up)

I just thought the comparison of the two was interesting.

Great blog. I am enjoying reading.

@3 Bags Full – Good points. You just have to wonder why they never changed the ad.

This just goes to show the value of doing a little bit of research. In this case, it saved you 1,000. However, this got me thinking. Say that you discovered that this blog was, in fact, getting a lot of traffic from Problogger. Instead of advertising on Problogger, why not advertise on the advertiser? The rates would almost certainly be much lower and yet you would still get exposure to a slice of the same audience. Plus, you know these people are likely to click on ads if they clicked on one to arrive at this other blog in the first place. Could be a potentially good strategy :)

Okay, so I decided to check out “Smarter than your average blog.” It is still updating regularly – about one post per day – but still getting no comments. I think that the problem is with the blog itself. It’s headline is “tips, tricks, and tools to make your blog brilliant.” First of all, the appearance of the blog itself is pretty bland and there is nothing remotely “brilliant” about any of it. Secondly, the content of the posts themselves don’t seem to contain any tips, tricks, or tools! Rather, what is on the front page at least, they are all rehashes or summaries of news items. No original content!

This blog is not smarter than your average blog – it is not even that average.

Is weird that they still have no comment whatsoever on their blog posts. You think they would have the path a couple of comments. It is weird that this person continues to advertise on that web site and if he is not getting what he wants. Maybe he doesn’t really care that he has to pay all that money for an advertisement spot.

There will always be a majority who will and will not click the ads. It is as simple as that.
