Blog Headlines for SEO

by Franklin Bishop on October 16, 2008

It can be difficult to know how to get traffic from search engines and a good blog headline is one way. If you thought you were the only one having a difficult time getting traffic from search engines then you are mistaken. There are not many blogs and web sites that will give you this information for free. However, over the years I have been a private consultant to many companies creating web sites and blogs.

Search engines never usually tell you how you can get a higher ranking for your blog itself or your blog posts, but during my time as private consultant I learned more than I already knew. The reason for that is because search engine optimization seems to be changing monthly so I had to change with it. I have talked a little about search engine optimization on this blog, but I’m going to talk more in the coming weeks because people are looking to get easy traffic to their blogs and over time search engines can do that for you.

One way to begin is by writing a good blog headline. I try to teach bloggers that it is important to create a striking blog headlines so you can get people’s attention. A striking blog headline gets people to read your posts, get social media users to come to your blog, and will help you get linked to by other bloggers. The main problem is that a striking blog headline may not get your post ranked very high in search engines.

Here’s some tips on how to get your blog posts ranked high in search engines even with a striking blog headline:

  • The most important keywords of your blog post should be at the beginning of your post headline. It seems as if Google and other search engines search through the first few words of the post title and then moves down the rest of the blog headline second.
  • Make sure the main keywords used at the beginning of your post title are in the first two sentences of your blog post. Again, Google and other search engine’s start from the top and go down.
  • When using adjectives to describe what you will be talking about, make sure that it is not part of your permalink. Unless you find that people will type that adjective in with the other keywords of your blog post, don’t use it in your permalink. In your permalink. just use keywords that you are trying to match with your blog headline.
  • Use Google keywords to help you find certain keywords that you can use in your blog headline that people search for. Look for ones that do not have a lot of competition. These will be the easiest ones to get your blog post ranked high in search engines.

Those are the simple techniques of writing a good blog post headline that can both be creative, but will also get your blog post ranked higher in search engines. There isn’t really any secret when it comes to writing a blog headline.

Sorry I was not able to get back to you right away. I was away for a couple of days. I really had to take into consideration that they were posting many times within the same hour and those were some of my rules. I tried to be fair as I could be when I see a lot of people complain after contest throughout the Internet.

Now for the search engine part. I have actually done this and it is really working good for my search engine rankings. It takes a little time, but after a month or two it really does work. Also, congratulations on the wedding and your own redesign.

Hmm, I’ll have to see what I can do about post titles…I usually like to post them as questions.

It doesn’t really matter if you’re going for good search engine rankings. It just depends on where you are trying to get your traffic from.

I’d have to say most of my traffic is social….whether it be social networks, blog commenting or whatever, so my titles seem to work very well so far.

The title question helps to ensure the click through, the post ending questions helps to ensure the comment ;)

Yes, titles are important. I get about 55% of my traffic from Search Engines and from what I checked, it’s all the keyword of my post title.

btw Franklin, is there a reason why this post was filed under UNCATEGORIZED? :)

I didn’t mean to post this under uncategorized. I probably should change it so I’m happy you pointed it out.

That is unbelievable that 55% of your traffic comes from search engines. Well, you know you are writing your post titles correctly when you are getting traffic from the keywords in those titles. You should definitely try to get traffic from social media also now. You might have to change the way you write titles for social media to get a lot of traffic from it though. I am always torn when deciding if I should write a blog post title for social media or search engines.

I think you’re missing one… the URL. Remember the fact that the blog title keywords are also in the URL most of the time.

Also, you have to always build links. If your site has no links, it almost doesn’t matter what your blog title is.
