Blog Tip: You’re an Idiot If You Are Not Commenting on Forums

by Franklin Bishop on September 1, 2008

Starting where I left off on my blog post, Blog Tip: You’re an Idiot If You Don’t Comment, Yes That’s Right Idiot!, you are an idiot if you are not commenting on forums. Once again I am calling you an idiot if you are not doing something! I used to be an idiot also. There are plenty of forums out there and you should be on them being very “Internet social” as I call it.

Just like commenting on other blogs, commenting on forums drives traffic to your blog. The best thing about forums is that it is a conversation with other people that care about the same things you do. What I’m saying is that if you are on a blogging forum then you and other people there probably care about blogging.

What’s good about this? Well, if your blog is about blogging then you have the chance of getting those people on the forum to come to your blog. How do I get people to come to my blog? Well, most forums allow you to put a signature so that every time you post it will show whatever you put in your signature at the bottom of your post (or you could call it a comment). So you want to make sure that you put the name of your blog and then link your text so that when someone clicks it will take them to your blog. This is just as good as commenting on other blogs and might even be better sometimes considering you can find some forums in your niche with a lot of users.

Basically, I always recommend that you comment the most at the places that have the most users. So if a blog has more subscribers and traffic then forums that are in your niche, then you should probably make sure to post on the blog first. However, forums are good because there are a lot of different threads (different conversations) going on so you can talk to a whole bunch of different people by posting on each thread.

What you want to also make sure is that when you post on forums that you give the best advice or comments as you possibly can. What you write on blogs or on forums will be building your brand. You want to make sure that people do not think negative about you because the way you get people to come to your blog in forums and from different blogs is by getting people to like your advice or whatever else.

There is a lot of different techniques you can use on forums to get people to come to your blog. In the coming weeks I will talk more about using forums to drive traffic to your blog. Before I go I want to say to make sure to comment on forums that are in your niche. I know this is just another thing that sounds like common sense but I see too many people in forums I am in have a link to their blog in their signature and it isn’t even relevant to what the forum is about.

It’s tricky, I still think there’s quite a large grey area about what search engines actually see as relevant. Sometimes the varied content elsewhere within a forum can be misleading to search engines. I tend to prefer blogs over forums purely because the message bein protrayed is generally more succinct!

I agree commenting on forums can be very helpful in building links and bringing traffic. I have one site that gets 50% of its traffic just from me actively participating on a few niche related forums!

People who take the time to read and write in niche forums are just the type of people who are most likely to read and comment in a related blog. Some of these forums can be quite large in terms of active members, too. But this does take time. I feel like, to get the most benefit, you really must try and be active and establish yourself within the forum. A lot of these places now have ‘karma’ ratings for individual members. If your karma or # posts is really low, then everyone will know that you are not an active participant.

It is funny how you keep calling everyone an idiot. I mean we probably are idiots considering a lot of us do not do these things. It’s funny how some people can be so critical of you but yet they never listen to you anyways. I guess it’s their problem if they are not going to do the things that people tell them to. A lot of people do not put their full effort into things like this and then it fails. And then they will come back and blame it on you or tell you it didn’t work but they never really tried.

Where or how do you draw boundaries of just being a great forum poster and to one that really points them to your blog/site? I continue to see it both ways to be completely honest it a lot of popular forums. But it can be sometimes really hard to draw the boundary of what is to much self promoting your site compared to just quality forum posting.

Hi. I regularly be familiar with this forum. This is the head period unqualified to ask a ridiculous.
How multitudinous in this forum are references progressive behind, artful users?
Can I bank all the communication that there is?

I don’t know if you can bank on all of that, but it can be helpful. I believe you can get many new readers from forums but they aren’t always very helpful to people trying to learn things.
