I don’t know if you can bank on all of that, but it can be helpful. I believe you can get many new readers from forums but they aren’t always very helpful to people trying to learn things.

Where or how do you draw boundaries of just being a great forum poster and to one that really points them to your blog/site? I continue to see it both ways to be completely honest it a lot of popular forums. But it can be sometimes really hard to draw the boundary of what is to much self promoting your site compared to just quality forum posting. It is funny how you keep calling everyone an idiot. I mean we probably are idiots considering a lot of us do not do these things. It’s funny how some people can be so critical of you but yet they never listen to you anyways. I guess it’s their problem if they are not going to do the things that people tell them to. A lot of people do not put their full effort into things like this and then it fails. And then they will come back and blame it on you or tell you it didn’t work but they never really tried.

People who take the time to read and write in niche forums are just the type of people who are most likely to read and comment in a related blog. Some of these forums can be quite large in terms of active members, too. But this does take time. I feel like, to get the most benefit, you really must try and be active and establish yourself within the forum. A lot of these places now have ‘karma’ ratings for individual members. If your karma or # posts is really low, then everyone will know that you are not an active participant.

I agree commenting on forums can be very helpful in building links and bringing traffic. I have one site that gets 50% of its traffic just from me actively participating on a few niche related forums!
