Digg Headlines That Work

by Franklin Bishop on December 10, 2008

Your digg headline is important because how many diggs you get can depend on it. Even though some of the digg headlines can be really annoying, they still work. It is likely that people get annoyed of them because they see them so often. However, the reason they see them so often is because they work.

Think about it, that one headline that always says “breaking” is on the front page of digg everyday. It is no coincidence, the reason it is there is because people can not stop clicking that digg button next to the headline. Below are some of the basic digg headlines that work.

Digg Headlines

Breaking – [The story headline]

Maybe one of the most annoying ones because TV channels like CNN and Fox news always has some story as their breaking news. People are channel surfing and when they see the headline breaking they stop. This is the same for digg. People seem to stop scanning the headlines when they read breaking. And if you are able to get people to stop on your headline then they are more than likely to digg your article.

[Number] [ways to do something]

This is probably one of the easiest headlines to get to the front page. Put a number in front of your digg headline and you will likely get at least 75 diggs.

DIGG THIS: [article headline]

For a while people got so sick of this one that they would bury the article. However, it is coming back again. I guess people got use to not seeing it so they’re more willing to digg it if they see it now.

DIGG It: [article headline]

This one is similar to digg this, but isn’t as popular. Just recently I began to see more digg headlines like this. Guess what, this headline seems to be working.

Honorable Mentions

[Obama]

People are absolutely obsessed with Obama on digg, so as long as you have something good to say about him you will likely get quite a few diggs.

[Bush]

People are absolutely obsessed with bashing Bush on digg, who isn’t? Why not go ahead and relate Bush to something negative in your niche. If it works, it works.

Those digg headlines are some of the most popular ones that are being used. Do you know of any other ones that seem to always work? Would not want to have missed any of the popular ones.

You’re right, I definitely see those types of headline formulas on Digg alot. But I think there’s more to it than just the formula. The subject matter the headline covers is just as important. No one will digg “Breaking – I Just Bought A Bagel” but they will probably digg “Breaking – Obama Just Choked On A Bagel”.

Quesiton: Why did you include a link to your post IN the same post? I’m sure there’s some strategy behind it. Is is a way to get your RSS readers to come to you page?

That is the basic strategy. With all those RSS subscribers, I might as well try to get them to come to my blog. I’m finally putting in an effort to make money from this blog. After selling my other two blogs I decided to create this blog so that could help other people that are interested in blogging and social media. I have built up a fan base faster than I thought was possible and so now I’m going to try to make money off this blog. It will be fun to report my findings to you and other readers.

I haven’t tried any of the “Digg This” headlines before, but it makes sense and just may try it in the future.

But the Number of ways heading seems to work like magic. I like it so much that I started a top 25 catagory on my personal blog. It works like a charm and I have about 10 list that are coming out in the future.

Thanks for the insight.

The number of ways heading seems to always work. Everyone seems to have success with it and digg users love it.

Great suggestions, and this is a perfect outline to follow. As depressing as it is, Digg visitors are so predictable, and are only looking for gossip and stupid articles about nothing. It’s rare to see an article on the first couple pages of digg, that are worth reading, unless you are looking for perverted humor.

Digg has gotten worse over the years. But you can easily work the system to get visitors to your blog. However, it may not all be worth it.

You are right, I would get traffic first if I was you. I recommend finding blogs that are in your niche and commenting on them everyday.

Thanks for the tips.

I work as a reporter and I think that “Breaking News” idea is certainly one that’s worth trying.

I’m fairly new at blogging (one month) and it’s been quite a learning curve for me so far.

There’s just so many conflicting ideas out there – which one to go for is the question.

People really come up with some crazy headlines in efforts to hit the front page. Number posts are most likely to get maximum Digg.
