Don’t Scare off Your Blog Traffic by Your Page Loading Slowly

by Franklin Bishop on July 31, 2008

One thing you want to remember is to always have a fast loading blog/website. I have been a big fan of John Chow for a really long time but as of lately it has been taking a while to load his website. This only angers me and leads me to leave his website.

Other readers of John Chow are some of my friends and they have been having the same problems as I have been. Some of them have even said they have stopped reading his blog because of the loading problems. I do know that some people are not having this problem though and that it might just be a browser issue. However, many other websites on the Internet that have a lot of traffic going to them are still loading just fine.

One thing you can learn from this is to always make sure you have enough bandwidth to hold the amount of people that is coming to your blog/website everyday. If it takes too long to load your website than there are many people that will just go on to the next one. This may not hurt you if one of these people is your religious readers, but if it is a new person coming your website and they never get a chance to see it because of loading problems then it could potentially hurt you. Every visitor could be a new subscriber so do not scare them off by a slow loading web site.

I recommend that you find a host that gives you a lot of bandwidth or one that you can pay for a lot of bandwidth. I use Bluehost and it gives me unlimited bandwidth and I have never had any loading problems on my other two blogs that have 20,000 subscribers. They are all hosted on the same account with unlimited bandwidth and load quickly.

There are many hosts that offers unlimited bandwidth but some of them write in fine print “unlimited bandwidth is only up to so much space”. So you should make sure to read the fine print. I have called the mini review websites and the blue host company itself, which I have been assured that unlimited bandwidth means unlimited bandwidth. I have three blogs hosted on my account right now and I have had no problems so it must be true.

So if you want to not scare traffic away make sure to have a fast loading website. Also, if you want to keep your religious readers then keep them happy by having your pages load fast. I might say that I am still waiting for the browser to load for John Chow because I do enjoy his blog. Not everyone would be as patient as I am the (such as my blogging friends).

I guess I have a short fuse because slow loading pages bug me and unless it’s something very specific that I need I will leave the page.

It bugs me that our lives have become so busy we can’t wait a minute for a page to load. Some of my own blogs load slow and I expect people to wait for me but I’m not willing to wait myself.

I have a few of my blogs on a hosting service that sucks. I won’t mention who it is until I manage to get my sites away from there. Having some problems getting my blogs moved.

I am happy to say that my blogs on HostGator are doing fine.

Bandwidth is a huge issue and worth paying the extra few dollars to be hosting on an account that has lots of bandwidth available.

Hi Franklin, I do agree with you about slow loading blogs and how it does turn a reader off and they just click on to another blog. Before becoming an owner of a Blog I would go to a blog and when it did take too long I would get frustrated and go to another blog. But since being an owner I have found that it still bothers me “But “I do seem to have a little more patience and will try to stick with it because I really want to read that blog. It was not too long ago when I came across an article about the 100 most slowest loading blogs, and there was “MomCashBlog”. I came in at about 50-75 and I really had no idea what I could do about it. I was told it was because there were too many video/webcam’s on my blog. Now I do know that John Chow also has alot of video’s on his blog also. But now that I know it has to do witih our Host I will be contacting them as soon as I’m done here! Great Post and good info. Thanks

Agree, sometimes we got so busy of our blogging and yet forget to check our pages…it’s really a great help though, when the reader will inform the blog owner so that can be fix.

Great Post! This is a very important aspect that is usually skipped by many, and it looks like even by the great John Chow! Also, you might want to look into different widgets, and how much other junk you have on your site that can also bog it down. Does anyone of a good site that can check your upload time?

Thanks!

I cannot stand blogs that have a slow loading page. A lot of them have slow loading pages because there is so much space that is taken up by the blog platforms. It would be nice if you could compress everything to make your page be able to load a lot faster. Is there anything out there that will speed up how fast a page loads?
