The Entrecard Mistake

by Franklin Bishop on July 24, 2008

Many bloggers are using Entrecard right now. I have to admit, I even use it to some extent on this blog. However, through my experiences with this program, I have to say that the amount of time you have to use to you even get the slightest traffic to your website is not worth it.

For one, you only get one EC every time you drop your card on someone else’s blog. So what is the problem with that? Well, if you take the time to drop a maximum of 300 cards a day, then it does get pretty time-consuming. And usually if you want to get some actual traffic to your website you will need to pay (with EC’s) for advertising that costs much more than 300 EC’s a day.

Another problem, the system is getting abused. People are constantly just dropping their cards on websites and not even looking at anyones content. Usually these people are the ones that get a lot of the ECs. And of course they get these while dropping their card on other peoples blogs. Usually what happens is that other people will drop their card on your blog back which gives that person another EC. Other people tend to want to advertise on this person’s blog then and so their price for advertising for one day gets really high.

Now if you look at the blogs that have a higher rate of the EC per day for advertising, then you will notice that most of them don’t even have over 50 subscribers. Most likely advertising on that blog will only get you a couple of people to come to your website and it’s not usually even in your group of people that would be interested in your blog. This turns into a high bounce rate.

One huge problem with Entrecard is that you do not have the big guys part of this system. So it is not likely to find anyone with more subscribers than a couple hundred of people. If you happen to find a blog that is part of Entrecard with more than a couple of hundred subscribers that it will cost you an outrageous amount of the EC to advertise on their blog.

Now is that worth it? I would say probably not. Entrecard has tried to fix that though by merging with Sezwho. Sezwho is a comment and blog post rating system for blogs. Now that it has merged with Entrecard, you get EC’s for commenting on other people’s blog posts. You get anywhere from 1 to 10 EC for every comment you write. The comments are rated by a five-star system. So obviously you take 10 divided by how many ever stars you end up with. Then how much ever that is, is the amount of the EC’s you receive. This does make the Entrecard system better just because instead of people just coming to your blog and dropping their card they will now comment on your posts. Usually when you can get interaction between readers, it will usually cause other people to post a comment also. Since the merger is new were yet to know if it truly makes a big difference. I would try the commenting system to get EC’s if you’re interested in Entrecard because commenting on blog posts has always been the number one way to drive traffic to your blog.

You probably are wondering why I would say the Entre card is a mistake if I continue to use it. Well, my blog is all about giving other bloggers tips that can create the perfect website for its readers. Those people that would care about reading my blog are any of the users of Entrecard. There are all obviously trying to find ways to get more traffic and to make a better blog. Just me being on Entrecard allows people to see my advertisement.

So what do I recommend you do if I don’t recommend Entrecard? Well, you should comment on as many blogs that pertain to your topic. Make sure that your comments are very helpful so that other people want to click on your link to see what else you are saying. I also recommend joining in on forums that pertain to your topic. You should put the link to your website in your signature so that people have the opportunity to click on it if they choose to do so. Those are the two ways that got me the most traffic on my two most popular blogs that ended up having more than 20k subscribers.

I have never used entrecard and by the sounds of it this was a good decision on my part. I didn’t really know much about it and I couldnt be bothered learning about it either so i just didn’t bother. Iike what you said about commenting though. I comment on loads of blogs everyday (about 30) and I found that this has been really really helpful in bringing me traffic. Keep up the good posts

I had never heard of EntreCard. Doesn’t really appeal to me, either. I think you are right – most people are probably much better off or at least equally off just doing old fashioned networking. Comment on other blogs and build connections. That is still what it is all about.
