Search Engine Ranking Tips

by Franklin Bishop on September 2, 2008

You can easily get your blog posts ranked higher in search engines. And I have some search engine ranking tips just for you. There are some simple techniques to do so and I’m going to talk about one: Make Sure That Keywords, First Paragraph, and Post Title Have Similar Keywords.

Search engines, especially Google, try to match your blog post title with your first paragraph and keywords. So you noticed that the title of my post Get Your Blog Posts Ranked Higher in Search Engines is also written in the first paragraph of my blog posts. Google will absolutely love this because they know that I didn’t make up some title for a blog post so I can out in Google. There are many spammers that try this so that’s why Google matches the first paragraphs words with their blog title to make sure they are similar.

Now you also need to make sure to add keywords to your blog posts. These will also be matched with your blog title and first paragraph. Google is pretty good about scanning your content and matching it with your keywords but other search engines do not always do that. I know too many people that worry too much about Google, but if you do not have a highly popular blog then you should really target these little search engines first. I can’t believe how much traffic I have got over the years with little search engines. Not everyone loves Google! There is less competition on the little guys.

There are many WordPress plug-ins that you can get for your blog so that you can add keywords, blog titles and descriptions easily. You should really make sure to download one and use it on your blog posts so that you get better search engine optimization. Search engine optimization is constantly changing so I continue to read blogs about it that way I get updated information. I will try to keep you guys up to date.

So which WordPress plugins would you recommend?

Well, all-in-one SEO for sure. I’ll make a special post for plugins.

Excuse my ignorance…but when you say “little search engines” which ones are you referring to? Outside of Google, Yahoo and MSN, which others do you recommend?

Reply

onlinetreason September 3, 2008 at 4:42 pm

There are tons of them. Ask, excite, lycos, dogpile, allthe web, hotspot, AltaVista, looksmart, gigablast, and much more.

Good tip, and yes it does really work. I seem to remember a blog post I wrote a while ago about a Mercedes in an automotive blog and for ages that post was topping search terms for that model of Mercedes.
It was actually an experiment to see what works and what doesnt, and it just so happened that it worked quite well.

Great information, but while I was watching live streaming videos from the Big Money Blogger Q&A at Izeafest Panel blogging conference thanks to http://www.shoemoney.com/2008/09/13/big-money-blogger-qa-at-izeafest-panel/.

I kept hearing Shoemoney repeat more than once to simply just write quality content of what your passionate about and the people will appreciate and keep coming. I honestly believe in this idea as well. While focusing on a niche and keywords, and slamming them in your articles, your article titles, and doing all different types of on site SEO will work.

I really believe that you can still make a quality site with quality passionate content that really shares your thoughts and feelings. Shoemoney went on to state that you should not just repeat or rewrite all the articles you can find, but really express and share your own ideas through quality writing.

I guess everyone has a little different approach, but that’s what makes the world go round!

Thanks for listening once again, and just trying to Keep It SEO Simple Stupid!

Peace,
Eric

Yeah, very true. The hardest thing though is traffic. Quality is noting w/out traffic.

Hey Franklin,

Funny that you say this…just as I opened my big mouth with this whole just content thing. Here comes another post found at http://www.shoemoney.com/2008/09/15/what-do-you-consider-a-successful-blog/

I think again Shoemoney is right on the money…the bottom line or questions to ask yourself is “What is your definition of success for a blog?”

That’s interesting about the first paragraph. How do you add keywords? Through a meta tag? “There are many WordPress plug-ins that you can get for your blog so that you can add keywords, blog titles and descriptions easily.” What do you use?

What are your thoughts about Adsense? I’ve noticed many of the blogs that you suggest don’t use this service to make money from their traffic. Do you have an opinion on the reason for this?

I wonder about this as well. I notice that there is no AdSense on this blog either. I suppose that for high traffic blogs it is more profitable to sell direct advertising rather than sharing cost per clicks with Google.

I have been getting good at making my blog posts get search engine traffic – though on my newer blogs without PR it is much more difficult. The SEO title tag plug-in is a good one i use, it really did make a difference!

Hi Franklin,

Sorry to disagree, I think the smaller search engines are not worth targeting, the closest competitors to Google are Yahoo and MSN, but after blogging for about 6 months, I rarely get any visitors from Yahoo even though it indexes more link backs to my blog than Google does.

This is a good method to rank better in search engines but I think it is too tedious and may not be worth all the trouble. You can always post first, then check for that page’s SERP, then try to edit the post again to see if there are improvements in SERP, that would be a targeted improvement rather than blindly writing blog posts in a fixed drone fashion.

You mentioned that you always keep up to date with blogs that discuss about SEO, why don’t you compile a list of those blogs and share it with us?

If you’re going the keyword route, the 250 word mark is a good place for your keyword phrase too. However, search engines are constantly evolving (Thank God)and they are smarter now than they were last year.

Search engines can now determine if a phrase is similar to a keyword. This allows you to write more naturally and use related keywords (silo-ing) stacked on top of each other. This also helps search engines weed out keyword stuffed spam content, so be careful.

For me, professional blogging is about making money, but it is also about improving the quality of the content on the Web. If you can’t blog about a topic and add something of value, why bother? Too many bloggers simply read other posts, and recycle the same content over and over.

This works for SEO, but it’s the lazy-man’s way to success. Write about what your passions and the traffic will come! There’s no easy formula, secrets to success, follow-these-three-steps-to-get-rich processes. There are insider tips and tweaks, but no magic formula.

I have never heard these tips before so thank you for giving me this information. I have looked everywhere for related tips but am unable to find any. If you’re looking for any content ideas than make sure to write about SEO more often. I know other bloggers are probably looking for the same things.

It’s amazing how many people still ignore basic keyword fundamentals in this day and age. It’s really not that hard once you get used to writing that way. That is a lesson I learned early on and it is almost second nature to me by now.
