How I Got 700 Followers on Twitter

by Franklin Bishop on December 19, 2008

Many bloggers have been talking about Twitter lately. I have posted a couple articles about Twitter here on my blog. I haven’t really talked about how I use Twitter and got 700 followers in three months. Well, I’m going to explain what Twitter strategy is.

I use to be like most people before ever making a Twitter account. I asked myself why would Twitter help my blog? Why be able to only write 160 characters per tweet? But I finally decided to sign up after continuing to read positive reviews from other bloggers.

When I began I didn’t even know where to start. I had been only reading positive things and not any tips on how to use it successfully. My first month was spent learning the ropes and watching other successful Twitter users. I learned quite a bit and I was able to use the information to get 700 followers. Now 700 followers is not a whole lot, but it is quite a bit since I started during the time where you could only follow 2,000 other Twitter users.

My Twitter Strategy:

  • Add people that are interested in your niche. You are limited to following only 2,000 people so make sure that you choose wisely. I always pick the people that have the most followers but I make sure that their followers would be interested in my blog. Then I go through and add other people that I find interesting in my niche. Just make sure to not add people too fast or your account will be suspended.
  • Reply to people that are interested in your niche. You should be able to easily find these people if you know the users in your niche that have some followers. If you reply to them it is likely that they will come to your Twitter page and hopefully follow you.
  • Reply to people that have a lot of followers. I just make sure that the popular Twitter users have followers that would be interested in my niche. I find that spending more time trying to get people to follow me that are in my niche is better than people that are not. I know, kind of common sense. The idea behind this is that they will reply to back you and everyone following that person will click on your username to know more about you.
  • Use Twitter search to talk to people about popular topics. When you go to the Twitter search page there will be a spot in the sidebar that says the most popular topics being talked about. If one is relevant to your niche then click on it so that you can find people that are talking about it. Then reply to other people’s tweets. It is likely that they will respond you and their followers will see your username. Then other people will likely reply to what you are saying about the popular topic since they will probably be interested in it also. It has worked for me anyways.
  • Use Tweet Later to message people after they follow you. This will be done for you automatically if you sign up for the free service. Just don’t look spammy by telling them to go to your blog. I have found that this turns off a lot of new followers. Most likely they have already visited your blog when they went to your twitter page. Just thank them and go on your way.
  • Use Qwitter to find out who quit following you and when they did. The most important part here is when they quit. You want to try and figure out if you have talked about something that someone did not like. I wouldn’t worry about why you lost followers unless you lost quite a few of them.
  • I use it to help bloggers that have questions. I just make sure that I can answer questions in 160 characters. People will see your username when another twitter user asks you a question. Then when other followers see that you are answering peoples questions they will ask you questions. If they decide to ask a question then their followers will see your username and possibly come to your twitter page. It’s basically a chain reaction.
  • I also make sure to use a Twitter plugin called Twitter Tools to automatically post that I have a new article on my blog. This lets all my followers know about my new post and it’s an easy way to bring people to my blog.
  • I also post links to interesting articles that have to do with my niche. That way people want to stay subscribe to me and others will want to subscribe to me.

That is my simple Twitter strategy. I do not spend all that much time on Twitter like I use to since I started consulting companies about social media and blogging. I try to be a machine and do it all, but there is only so much time in a day. If you have any strategies of your own let me and others know about them. No secrets, right?

Thanks for sharing, Franklin. I was hip to most of the topics you discussed, but was glad that you shared what was important about Qwitter. I could not find anything useful for that tool, but finding out when someone unsubscribe and then looking at what you were talking about at that time makes great sense.

It is appreciated and keep it coming!

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 3:48 pm

No problem. It is definitely good to know when people unsubscribe so that you can know what you did wrong. Well, draw conclusions anyways. I will try to keep it coming.

I am always trying to get the most out of everything and I will tweak it until I can get a big boost. I hope it will be a success for you.

Isn’t twitter great! Thanks for the info…I’ve only been able to get 70 followers after 4 months. I’m about to hit it out of the park though!

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I think if you just try to the different things and then find what works best to get more followers you’ll be fine. It does take time.

I like your idea of sending people direct messages once they start following me. Gives Twitter a personal touch. I just started using a new tool called BrightKit (http://www.brightkit.com), and it allows you to schedule posts, send messages, and check stats all in one interface. It’s still in beta and they’re adding new features every week. Seems very promising. It’s free while it’s in beta, but they’re going to announce pricing plans once it’s out of beta. Definitely a tool to try!

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Thanks for letting me know about the tool. I had never heard of it so it looks like something I might try out.

I keep hearing how GREAT twitter and how much it can help your blog and I even signed up for it. However, I haven’t used it so far. 700 followers is significant. Thanks for sharing exactly HOW you go about using twitter. This helps me understand it a bit more. I think I will bite the bullet and try to figure twitter out over the Christmas holidays. Man, there are soo many ways to get traffic out there!

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 3:53 pm

I know, there are quite a few ways to get traffic. I think you just have to find the one that is giving you the most and continue to do the things to get traffic from that source. Twitter can be great but it is not perfect for everyone.

Great post timing Franklin, I just signed up for Twitter and started following you. I’ll check out the plugin, sounds really useful.

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Hopefully this helps. Thanks for following me and I will see you over there.

700 twitter followers in 3 months is not awesome. But if you say 700 active and quality followers in 3 months is the best.

Melvin December 20, 2008 at 3:58 am

Yeah twitter is really damn great… I think its also a lot of fun to use that because its nice to speak in front of many people and have them giving their opinion..

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 3:58 pm

I agree with you. It is a good way to get people’s opinion fast. I have found it to be better than having polls on my blog.

Great help on using twitter to market and promote Blog contents. Thanks for sharing cool twitter tips :-)

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Anytime. It is definitely a great promotional tool and a lot of times people would rather follow you on their and not subscribe to your blog.

I like Qwitter its so cute.. Anyhow, I certainly would like to know when or whom is let go. I know that if I let go, its due to no activity / need room for Guru twitter like you! :)

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I have found that people stop following you when you are posting things. They seem to be annoyed by updates even though that is what the service is for.

Laura-Whateverebay December 22, 2008 at 12:36 am

They stop following when
1) you stopped posting
2) post non-sense
or 3) or you do not follow after a certan amount of time

:)

I never really thought about using Twitter before, but it looks like everyone is using it now! I guess its time I sign up and start following people to try and get some traffic to my blog.

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 4:04 pm

You should at least try it out. It doesn’t work very well for everyone especially if you do not have much time.

Jesse Hines December 21, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Nice post. Helpful ideas.

But…you write:

“I asked myself why would Twitter help my blog? Why be able to only write 160 characters per tweet?”

And:

“I just make sure that I can answer questions in 160 characters.”

Doesn’t Twitter limit you to 140 characters per post?

Franklin Bishop December 21, 2008 at 10:41 pm

My bad, sorry about that.

Dennis Edell December 22, 2008 at 5:35 pm

I opened my account LAST December and held off due to my addiction qualities lol, I knew I had to get other things straight first.

I plan to totally bust out in the new year though, and even have set up incentives for my grand reopening and beyond. Perhaps we’ll run into each other. :)

Hello Franklin. I followed your comment at DerekSemmler.com over to your blog. I wanted to recommend my Twellow strategy to you (linked in to this comment). I have 723 followers today and I believe I opened my Twitter account 32 days ago. I’d verify that if I could figure out where I saw that date. All followers are not created equally so also check out Twinfluence. I posted some stats using that tool in my post at http://www.growmap.com/pay-it-forward-works/.

Edy December 23, 2008 at 12:38 am

Thanks for sharing your idea franklin. I don’t know if twitter limit the number of following to 2000. Do you always post on twitter when you have new post on your blog?

Ben Tremblay December 23, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I’ve found the twitter search engine very helpful to increase the number of followers. Search for certain keywords related to your niche and talk to people, as simple as that!

Gerald Weber SEM Group December 26, 2008 at 9:37 pm

These are all good tips. I already employ most of the strategies here. However I think qwitter has quit. I used to occasionally have people stop following me but I haven’t gotten an qwitter notification in a month and a half. I’m sure I have people still unfollowing me occasionally.

Clinton Skakun December 26, 2008 at 10:41 pm

I find the first four really effective.

Missy (from G34 Media) December 26, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Hi, Franklin: Do you tend to auto follow as well? Or how do you handle this aspect of Twitter.

I’ve been back and forth on this one abit, not sure what is best. I run several blogs, so my following is quite diversed. It is not about one niche, but several.

But i don’t like the idea of opening several Twitter accounts. So i’m pretty sure i will stick to the one i have, and just use it as best as possible.

Wesley December 27, 2008 at 7:29 am

Awesome tips, didn’t even know there was a 2000 people follow limit.

Dean December 27, 2008 at 8:16 am
