Private Ads Part 1: Should New Blogs Have Ads

by Franklin Bishop on September 23, 2008

I wrote an article about how to make money on a blog a few days back and many people didn’t seem to like it because they’ve read the same basic ideas on other moneymaking blogs. I think the most popular way to make money on blogs is by having to private ads. So I have created a miniseries on just private ads itself to hopefully help you make the most money possible.

The first question people usually ask is if a new blog should have advertising? Well the answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. I can’t directly give you an answer unless I can see your blog but I think you can answer the question yourself. However, after saying that I do believe that all blogs should start out with some advertising!

Here are my reasons why:

  • You can make some money. Many people would say that making money on a new blog by private ads is very difficult . But making some money is better than making none. You can always use some money when you have a new blog because there are many things you can use that money for (Especially blogging needs).
  • Having ads later can mean you have to redesign your blog. This is one of the worst things for a new blog. Many people think that they shouldn’t have ads on their blog, but when they decide to add advertising they find that there isn’t anyway to add them to their current blog design. I wrote earlier about how a redesign can get you more readers, however it won’t this early in the game though. Why not just add the advertising right away and make sure that everything will fit.
  • Don’t change your mind down the road. If you decide not to go with advertising then you probably shouldn’t decide to add advertising until your blog until you have built up a readership. If you only have around a hundred subscribers then don’t go and decide to add advertising because you may lose half of those. For someone that has 5000 subscribers, they don’t really have to worry about losing only 50 of theirs because they can afford to do so. But someone with just a hundred really does have to worry about that.

I think all of you bloggers will find that adding advertising right away is the easiest route. No one will care if you take advertising off of your blog, but they could care if you decide to add advertising. Just remember that all blogs are not suitable for advertising. Those are bloggers that are not trying to make money though. However, some bloggers use their blog as a way to advertise their product. One good example of that is Tim Ferris. He is a blogger but mainly he is just pitching ideas out there and hoping that you will decide to buy his book, The 4-Hour Workweek. And trust me, it were like a charm for him. Hope this helps and tomorrow I will try to help you even more with having private ads on your blog.

Its not that I really did not like the post “how to make money on a blog”. It’s more just the same ole same ole. And even this is honestly the same information. While this is all good information, and I agree with it. I think more and more people are wanting the how to get started, where to even begin, or where can I even start to get private ads. While, this information a good fundamental to understand, I just feel like just like the other post I have read it all before. I mean seriously, all your blogs that you have suggested to read has this information on it well.

The challenge with going the private ad route for a new blog is the fact that not many advertisers would want to advertise on a new blog that does not have an established reader base or proven flow of traffic. But I agree with your point about attempting to suddenly add advertising just when your blog is getting popular. One way around this is to begin by use Google Adsense when the blog is new. Or, you can use affiliate links. It is easy to fill a few rows of 125×125 slots with affiliate ads. Then, later on down the road you can replace these with direct advertising if you want to go that route and not have to redesign a thing!

I think one key to consider in your advertising strategy is where you make the most money. Are you wanting to drive traffic away from you to make a few cents, or to you for higher ticket? Often the best strategy is certainly the ads, but often I find that the webmaster is so early to earn a few cents, he/she looses credibility. Tom Ferris is a great example of the focuses site.

Good stuff. I started out with adsense ads from the get go. I need to learn more on SEO and how to get my readership up, or start a new blog altogether with a differant niche and get a more solid readership. Any help on all those topics I mentioned?

Great read! I think all of us need to make the right decision on whether to have private ads on our blogs right away. I think it would be easier just to have them so that if any readers become subscribers they will not be pushed away because of a major change like putting ads on your blog.

There are many forms of making income using the internet and writing blogs is just one way to accomplish that. As the internet continues to evolve there will come with it more and more blog earning potential.

What about if your wanting to start an affiliate blog or site. How well can private ads go head and head with that idea? Also, again the questions still comes to my mind where and how do all these private ads come about?!?

Hey, ad placement is a big thing in TV and movies. Everybody wants the money.

You also have to remember that your ability to sell private ads is tied not just to the kind of traffic your blog gets but also what you are writing about! If you blog about chihuahuas then that limits, quite a bit, the number of advertisers that might be interested in placing an ad before an audience like that. As for myself, I truly wonder what kind of advertiser would be interested in a hot button issue blog like I run.

I doubt you would lose half of your subscribers by adding fairly non intrusive private advertising. If you added heaps and there were loads of popups and it was really hard to find the content then yeh you could. But otherwise I don’t think advertising makes much difference to your subscriber count.
Private ads are probably the best way to monetize your site so I am glad you posted about it

Dammit, just realised that I posted the comment above 54 minutes after I posted the last comment so it didn’t count. So this comment will be an hour after my last one so it sound ccount
@ James – I bet there are millions of people out there wanting to advertise chihuahua products. I mean it is a pretty popular market…lol
But you are right, the right topic + the right traffic + the right ad placement = $$$$$ (and lots of them)

You may be right. As a proud owner of two chihuahuas we love to spoil our little dogs. If you are smart about adding a few ads off to the side I can’t imagine why half your subscribers would suddenly leave. If your site goes from a clean, ad-free layout to JohnChow.com overnight then you probably will upset a good many of them :)

This article only serves to emphasize the fact that advertising is generally one of the best–if not THE best–ways to monetize a blog. Given the obstacles blog developers have to face when they decide to change tactics midstream, I think it’s fairly obvious that advertising should be implemented as early on as possible. Good point though about advertising not necessarily being ideal for all blogs.

Advertising is only great if you have advertisers that want to advertise with you and you can command a high figure. If not, then it is not even a feasible way to monetize a blog. As Franklin has posted here before, having your own product to sell can easily surpass advertising income (especially cost per click). 10 advertisers might pay you $25 a month for an ad slot, which is a decent $250 per month of income. However, if you can sell a $10 product to 100 people in that same months time then you have just made $1,000 per month of income.

Oh, of course. I only meant that for blogs that are not geared towards selling a particular product. Not every blog is in the business of selling something after all. But yes, if you do have something to sell, advertising will come in at a distant second as a source of revenue.

Okay, sure, that obviously makes sense. In that case advertising and/or affiliate sales are about the only source of revenue that a blog could strive for. Unless I am missing something. There is still the issue of how to attract private ads as a small blog.

I’ll get into that this week.

Sounds good. Perhaps you can also cover number and placement of ads. I have heard some people say that having too many ads or trying too hard to place ads in front of your readers can kill a new blog.
