Saturday’s Quick Blog Tip: Blog Title and URL

by Franklin Bishop on August 30, 2008

I have been going through a lot of different blogs to try and get ideas for new types of blogs. What I have noticed is that the title of these peoples blogs are not in the blogs URL. If you have done this then your search engine optimization is going to hurt because of it.

Think of it this way, search engines match your blog title with your URL and keywords. If those three have the same keywords in them then your blog gets more strength with those keywords. I know a lot of you are probably thinking that this is just common sense but you do not know how many people I see that do not do this.

At least when you’re starting out it is nice to have some strength with certain keywords in search engines. The best way to do that is the technique I’m talking about so if you think it’s common sense, then actually do it!

Wow, that does seem like common sense! But I know there are people who aren’t doing this – I’ve seen it too! Very good advice, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for letting us know. While this is common sense to most, we newbies need all the tips we can get!

Im confused, do you mean the site title or when you say blog title do yo mean the post/article title?

In other words do you mean that if I post an article called downtown jubilee that the url needs to be site.com/downtown-jubilee or do you mean that the blog website title needs to be site.com | make money | downtown jubilee ?

Flesh this out a little where grandma can understand…

The title of your page “Seize the Page” should be in your url like you have it.

I think the best thing to do is use a keyword that you want to rank high on in your URL and blog title. I think it will be much easier to get traffic right away if you rank high right away. I think that is what I’m going to try to do with my new blog.

Actually I believe wordpress has a very simple plug or you can manually set it up. It drives me crazy to see url.com/page=134 and just numbers. In my opinion that’s just completely wasting a simple and easy SEO opportunity!

Just my two cents!

Yes I use it on my blog, I beleive it was a quick edit in the settings/permalinks/custome structure..a small adjustment
/%postname%/ and thats it. Works good too.

By default, WordPress uses query strings in its URLs. For example, http://your-blog/?p=180. These URLs are not search friendly. You should change your Permalink structure to incorporate post date and name. In Admin go to Options >> Permalinks and click the radio button next to Date and name based.

This will now use your post title in the URL. It might look something like this:

http://your-blog/2007/11/14/optimize-your-blog/

This URL now contains keywords the search engines might pick up.

Many times you will want the URL to be different than the actual post title. For example, my post Blogs Gone Wild!: Optimization Strategies to Ensure Yours is ‘Of Age’ is a hook that will hopefully get people to click, but it’s not good for optimization purposes. So, rather than using the post title as the default page title and URL, I changed them both to Complete Blog Optimization Guidelines.

Is it better to have it like this

http://your-blog/2007/11/14/optimize-your-blog/

or is it better to have it like this

http://your-blog/optimize-your-blog/

Whats best for SEO and why?

I prefer the second.

I also prefer the second. I think having less non essential words or numbers in your title will rank better in search engines.
