I was reading an article yesterday from the great Yaro Starak @ entrepreneursjourney.com. He was talking about a friend of his that opened up a new directory of bloggers that is similar to others but has some of its own perks. You can read a little about it below and then I will explain why this may hurt bloggers more than help them.
“The core function of AffSpehere is like any other article directory service – you submit articles and they are syndicated across the web. In return you get traffic when a person who reads the article clicks the link in your signature file.
That’s where the similarities between AffSphere and other directories end. AffSphere has a few more features that designed to help you make money, including -
• A credit system that triggers each time you submit an article or refer other people into AffSphere. You can use those credits to run your own banners or AdSense across the AffSphere network.
• You are permitted to include affiliate links in the articles you submit, although as Anik notes, you reduce the likelihood your article will be picked up by others if you have obvious promotion in your articles.
• The opportunity to earn commissions for referrals into the AffiliateClassroom training course (one of Anik’s training courses). This could be quite lucrative as all AffSphere new sign-ups are offered a $1 trial into AffiliateClassroom.”
What I like about this is that it gives you the opportunity to submit your articles to try and get more traffic to your web site. The part I don’t like is that you can spend too much time on a web site like this because it gives you the sense that you can make money off of it. The truth of the matter is you’re not likely to make much off of it. If you spend too much time on here than you will not even have enough time to write good content to even make money. I’ve seen too many web sites that do this that benefit themselves but not the bloggers. I know some of you will disagree with me but I have helped many friends get out of a hole they dug themselves into using sites that are similar. Spend your time writing good content and post more than once a day. Comment on 30 or more blogs a day that are in your niche and you shouldn’t have any problem bringing traffic to your blog today or in the near future.

I totally agree with you about sites like these promising more than they can deliver. Not that there’s necessarily anything deceptive going on; they just aren’t as time-productive as many of us were led to believe. I learned this lesson the hard way.
I usually try to stay away from any revenue sharing type of sites…the don’t yield very much at all.
Great article, i agree totally with you, but article submission is a good form of getting traffic i seen it work.
I understand the point you are trying to make.
However, some of these sites enable you to employ tremendous leverage through the multiple levels of referral benefits.
You are entirely correct you are not likely to make a significant amount solely through your own efforts on these sites, but I believe AffSphere has a 5 level downline where the leverage can be huge.
When you combine the marketing benefits this site offers with the financial benefits through multiple referral levels, you have a powerful combination that will make the plain vanilla article directories OBSOLETE in the long run.
Best of success,

Blog money-I understand what you’re trying to say also but it’s hard to ever get any sort of readership if you waste all of your time on these type of directories. You need to get some constant traffic and a couple of hundred subscribers before you take the time to do any of the things like this. I guess it just matters where you are at with your blog.
Vladinati-I also agree with you. I never meant to make it sound like I didn’t want you to submit your articles to these directories. I just don’t want you wasting all your time messing around with them. You can always submit your articles to these directories as it doesn’t take a lot of time. I just think if you’re doing all the other stuff like this new web site’s trying to persuade you to do is just a total waste.
Lisa-they do seem to lead you on that it won’t take a lot of time to do all this. Trust me, it is very time-consuming unless you’re just submitting articles that you wrote for your blog already.
Onlinetreason:
A properly developed backlink program will deliver far more targeted traffic to your blog due to its impact on the search engines than due to the actual directory links themselves.
Your goal should not be huge short term traffic spurts. You wil ge some TARGETED TRAFFIC from blog directories, RSS submission sites, and article directories but not a major amount
immediately.
You should make sure your articles concern your blog’s most important keywords.
Use these same keywords in the resource box as anchor text in hyperlinks to your blog.
By the way over the long term your articles will deliver more traffic via being found in the search engines than from individuals going directly to the article directories and searching.
Try to submit to 3-5 blog directories per day and submit at least 1 article per week.
You will dramatically increase your link popularity over the long term for sustained free targeted search engine traffic.
Combine directory backlinks with article backlinks, and you will develop something very powerful.
I maintain a list of The Top 101 Blog Directories & RSS Submission Sites on my blog at:
Blog Directories
Since I update this list weekly there are now 276 directories listed, with NO DEAD LINKS.
Go for the long term success, and don’t get discouraged.
Best of success,

You are right that it would give bloggers a false sense of being a way to make money. While the revenue sharing model is nice, it’s not going to make you enough to be more worthwhile than other endeavors.

A very interesting article. I think these kind of web sites to screw up a blogger’s mindset. It will make people want to spend all their time on web sites such as this. I think we all just need to focus our mindset on things like commenting on other blogs and getting back links. Those are the best way to get traffic and sooner or later make money.
