Work Only Two Hours a Day Blogging?

by Franklin Bishop on September 17, 2008

I was going through a whole bunch of different blog posts the other day when I came along an article by Yaro Starak called Do You Really Only Work Two Hours a Day? And it really got me thinking about the tactics that some bloggers use to get people to subscribe and come back.

Yaro talks about the reasons he says he only works a couple hours a day blogging. He knows that people want to read his blog if he is making six figures by blogging only two hours a day. He knows if he says he works eight hours a day blogging that people will probably not want to subscribe because for the most part people are only looking for a way to make money by only working a couple hours.

Now the question is, is there any blogger that works a couple hours a day? Well, there may only be one blogger that hardly does anything and has thousands of subscribers, Dosh Dosh. Maki is the owner of Dosh Dosh and hardly writes one article a week. He doesn’t comment on any blogs. He is just a great writer which attracts a lot of readers. He wrote a blog post about it here.

Now back to the question. It is nearly impossible to only work two hours a day blogging if you really want to become successful. Yet there are some people that get lucky like I have and Dosh Dosh. Both of us didn’t try to successfully make a blog but it just happened. Nowadays, you have to do a lot more work because there are thousands of blogs being created every day.

I’m thinking that you probably could work as a blogger for four to six hours everyday. Your blog will be successful and you’ll be able to have the financial freedom you are looking for. The hardest part is always the beginning and you’re always going to have to work a lot so you can get to where you want to be. However, once you hit the amount of subscribers and visitors that you want, you can probably just take a couple hours a day and write posts and answer questions people might be asking you.

Basically Yaro lets the truth out in that article. People just use that technique so that they will buy their products or subscribe to their blog. Trust me, I have never worked two hours a day blogging. But it shouldn’t matter because blogging is fun if you are writing about something that you’re interested in and of course the best part is that you are your own boss.

Like anything people want to buy the dream. Most people who start blogs aren’t looking to build a successful business. They just want a turnkey system where they can make loads of money without having to work for it.

Hey This post reminded me of the book Timothy Ferriss’ The 4 Hour Work Week. Did anyone ever read this?

Well, I don’t see it really happening, I mean look at some of the big dog bloggers like John Chow and Shoemoney they are traveling and working probably more hours now than when they were just posting once or twice for years.

I am always very skeptical when I see these type of posts, titles, or products that promise everything. They usually promise tons and deliver none!

This is interesting. Two hours is not very long. I know people that work over 8 hours somedays.

Two hours a day for a blog seems pretty reasonable to me. If you are really productive you can get a lot done in two hours. Heck, you could spend a few hours on the weekend, create all of your posts for the week, and then just schedule them in advance. What really starts consuming a lot of time, I’ve discovered, is reading other people’s blogs, leaving comments, and other promotional activities.

If you do not have a lot of time you can always consider teaming up with one or several other people and doing a team or multi-author blog (depending on the blog’s focus, of course).

I personally think 2 hours a day for a blogging ‘job’ is not sufficient, especially if you were to make it your main income. Like Franklin’s other post, “5 Reasons Why I Comment on 36 Different Blogs”, bloggers tend to have tendencies to be updated about news across the blogosphere. Just by reading other blogs and commentating on other blogs, it would have taken up at least 1.5 or even 2 hours every day. Unless, of course, you shut yourself from the rest of the blog world, and just persistently write about happenings in your personal life and don’t care whether you have any traffic at all, hehe.

I read this article upon your recommendation and it is really good. I want to be a blogger within the next 12 months who can literally just work 2 hours per day. This way I can spend more time with family and friends and doing things that are really important to me. This will be even more important when I start having kids.

I admit, that I spend next to zero time as a blogger. It is a hobby that I hope will take off in the future. It is fun and a great way to relieve stress and get your thoughts organized.
Cash flow from it will be nice though when it happens!

I honestly believe in hard work and can you really work 2 hours even if your working extremely hard and busting tail. That’s not much time to complete such task that a blogger needs and especially task that have already been stated on this blog such as the following:

blog commenting
blog posts
blogsphere – making contacts, adding friends, etc

I think that once you get established that 2 hours a day would keep the blog going. but getting started needs as much time as you can really. I don’t think a new blog would get that far in 2 hours a day.

I just read an interesting article about outsourcing and virtual assistance over at John Chow. With the popular methods of using virtual assistance I could see you working only 2 hours. But, you have to get a really good one or sometimes just more work for you to go back and clean up all there mess. So, this could be possible I guess!

Just looked at that JohnChow post that Eric refers to. The basic idea of acquiring help to manage certain aspects of your blog is an excellent way to grow your blog without sacrificing more of your own time. However, unless you are already rolling in dough hiring people may not be cost-efficient. I would suggest doing basic networking and find online friend who are willing to team up with you. There are plenty of other kinds of mutual compensation beyond just paying somebody.

I spend less than 2 hours a day and make money from my blog, a few hundred USD. Considering the conversion rate, it’s enough to cover for my petrol and food for the entire month.

Every other $$$ I need comes from my business :P That’s where I spend most of my time on…….. for now.

Sure, I myself offer to guest blog on other people’s web sites in exchange for them blogging on my own sites. It is an arrangement that has worked well for the most part. And I find that I somehow get better results from people that I have paid in services instead of money.

Yeah, that is certainly one way to do it. Same idea as link exchanges. When the interactions are more *personal* and not just an anonymous exchange of money, then the results are probably better. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with hiring a writer if you can afford it. But establishing a connection with someone and building off that connection through your blogs feels more genuine.
